1. Research Areas

The Phonetics and Voice Laboratory at the Institute of Linguistic Sciences, Shanghai International Studies University is a specialized laboratory dedicated to a full range of speech‑related experimental research and teaching. It supports research and teaching activities including speech acoustic recording and analysis, articulatory physiology observation, and speech perception experiments. Its research covers multiple disciplines such as phonetics, phonology, psycholinguistics, cognitive neuroscience, speech communication and speech disorders, voice and multimodal speech recognition, and speech synthesis.

2. Research Equipment

The laboratory covers a total area of approximately 22 square meters, with an electromagnetically shielded soundproof booth (floor area about 13.2 square meters, usable area about 8.2 square meters). It is equipped with both desktop and ceiling‑mounted (slide‑rail) microphones to meet speech acoustic data collection needs in diverse scenarios. The laboratory also houses an ultrasound speech acquisition system (AI Micro Speech), one 8‑channel electroglottograph (Laryngograph EGG‑D800), and one 2‑channel portable electroglottograph (Laryngograph EGG‑D100). These devices enable the capture of movement data from key articulators such as the tongue, as well as the collection and analysis of glottal opening and closing data during vocal fold vibration, both in the laboratory and in fieldwork.
