Who are we?
Established in December 1949 in Shanghai China, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) has developed itself into a university which offers 12 national top degree programs and courses in 49 languages, with operation of more than 100 research institutes and centers serving as academic think tanks to provide advisory services on language policies, diplomatic strategies and global public opinion of China.
SISU has now established ties with more than 430 universities and institutions from 62 countries and regions, and has maintained close connection with international organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union. Over the past five years, around 4,000 international students have enrolled our programs each year.
The Institute of Language Sciences is a research and teaching institution that integrates linguistic research, undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral education, and the development of linguistic science and technology products. Established in 2024, the Institute consolidates the University’s research and teaching unit, the Institute of Linguistics and the Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications.
The Institute focuses on linguistic research, with primary research areas including language development, patterns of linguistic change, and mechanisms of linguistic cognitive processing. Building on its strengths in sociolinguistics and language education, the Institute advances research in theoretical and applied linguistics, explores cutting-edge issues in language data science and neurocognitive linguistics, develops linguistic science and technology products, and cultivates high-level talent in the field of linguistic sciences.
The Institute maintains research and teaching facilities at SISU’s Songjiang Campus. The Songjiang Campus is equipped with multiple student activity rooms, modern multimedia conference rooms, and a university-level key laboratory—the Laboratory of Language Science and Multilingual Intelligence Applications (which includes a behavioral laboratory, an eye-tracking laboratory, an EEG laboratory, a speech laboratory, a child laboratory, a language data processing and application laboratory, and a smart learning laboratory). Furthermore, the university’s Brain Functional Imaging Center, centered around functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), has elevated the discipline’s hardware capabilities to a leading domestic standard.
