发布时间:2026-05-13浏览次数:10来源:语言科学研究院

The Institute of Language Sciences continues to uphold the spirit of scientific research innovation, fully leveraging the advantages of language research at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) to engage with the frontiers of contemporary language science and promote its advancement.

The Institute currently has an international faculty of 39 full-time teaching and research staff, including 19 professors/researchers (of whom 4 are international experts), 10 associate professors/associate researchers (of whom 3 are international experts), and 9 lecturers/assistant researchers. In addition, the Institute has appointed several distinguished scholars from both China and abroad as adjunct/visiting researchers. The Institute boasts 2 Changjiang Scholars, 1 recipient of the “Ten Thousand Talents Program” for Young Top-Notch Talents, 4 Elsevier China Highly Cited Scholars, and 4 editors-in-chief or associate editors of SSCI/A&HCI journals. Furthermore, the Institute’s “Language Data Science and Applications” faculty team has been selected for the Ministry of Education’s third batch of “National University Huang Danian-style Teacher Teams.”

The corpus research team led by Professor Hu Kaibao actively conducts corpus-related research while promoting academic exchange in corpus research and applications. Since its first National Summer Workshop on Corpus Translation Studies in 2012, the team has consistently organized corpus research and application training activities annually for over a decade, receiving positive social feedback and a strong reputation for training.

To further promote the application of corpora in foreign language teaching, research, and other related fields, and to strengthen academic exchange in this area, the Institute of Language Sciences at SISU regularly organizes a series of summer workshops on language science each year.

In 2026, the Institute will launch higher-quality training activities in a blended format combining online and offline participation. The workshops will combine expert lectures, case discussions, and hands-on practice for participants. Starting with research methods, the workshops will cover the construction and application of corpora, methods and applications of large language models in language research, translation studies, and literary studies, as well as the practical implementation of language science methods, exploring the application pathways of corpora in different fields. The goal is to enhance the ability of foreign language teachers, students, and scholars to use corpora in their foreign language research.

1. Summer Workshop Series Schedule

PART/01 Workshop on Language Science Methods Research and Practice

Course Content:
This training rejects superficial theoretical indoctrination and adopts real research scenario reconstruction as its core design logic. Technically intensive: It covers three golden tools of language research – eye-tracking, EEG, and R statistics – from equipment principles to operational details. Practice-oriented: Each technology module includes a three-step process of laboratory observation – data collection – analysis exercise. For example, in the eye-tracking course, participants will personally experience reading experiments, collect and analyze data. This course will guide participants through hands-on experience with common software packages used in psycholinguistic research, including the experimental programming software PsychoPy, the EEG data preprocessing module MNE, and the linear mixed-effects model package lme4.

  • Day 1: Focuses on fundamentals of research design and PsychoPy experimental programming, covering experimental design and cutting-edge techniques in psycholinguistics/neurolinguistics, as well as PsychoPy experimental programming.

  • Day 2: Statistical testing practice (based on R) and eye-tracking experimental techniques, covering basic statistical hypothesis testing, introduction to eye-tracking methods, eye-tracking project practice (including laboratory observation), eye-tracking data processing, and academic writing.

  • Day 3: Advanced statistical modeling (based on R) and EEG experimental techniques, covering implementation of multivariate statistical models in R, introduction to EEG techniques, EEG project practice (including laboratory observation), EEG data processing, and academic writing.

PART/02 Workshop on the Micro-Program in Language Data Science

Micro-Program Introduction:
The “Language Data Science” micro-program is supported by the Language Data Science and Applications program at the Institute of Language Sciences, SISU. Established as a new discipline at the Institute in 2020, Language Data Science and Applications aligns, on the one hand, with the Ministry of Education’s New Liberal Arts development strategy and the contemporary trend toward interdisciplinary research, and on the other hand, actively responds to the national major development strategy for artificial intelligence by cultivating high-level talent in the field of language intelligence.

Language Data Science and Applications is an emerging interdisciplinary discipline based on information science, statistics, linguistics, and translation studies. It aims to study the various types, states, attributes, and patterns of change in language data, in order to reveal the underlying patterns of human language and language behavior, and to explore the application of language data in smart education and artificial intelligence. Based on the application of corpora and databases, this discipline conducts language data-driven research in language studies, translation studies, smart education, and artificial intelligence, thereby achieving an organic integration of data science with research in linguistics, translation studies, smart education, and language intelligence. It maximizes the revelation and explanation of the nature of language and translation, and promotes the application of language data in fields such as smart education and language intelligence.

The series of “Language Data Science” courses offered by the Institute of Language Sciences at SISU covers linguistic theory, corpus construction, computational linguistics, programming, and data development. The curriculum is comprehensive and holds strong disciplinary advantages compared to similar courses at universities nationwide.

The “Language Data Science” micro-program requires students to master linguistic theory and knowledge, language database construction and application, natural language processing, and other professional knowledge and techniques upon graduation, as well as to have the ability to apply this knowledge and these techniques to solve problems in linguistics and natural language processing.
